ASUU slams Gov. Elechi over Ebonyi State University name change

Ebonyi State chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, yesterday criticized the purported change of  name of the state-owned institution, Ebonyi State University, EBSU, to Ebonyi State International University, ESIU.

The union’s decision, which was the highpoint of an emergency meeting in Abakaliki, came at a time the state government also ordered the university to reduce the number of faculties from 11 to seven and departments from 70 to 35. The union’s chairman, Prof Emeka Nwakpu, said the government’s move would have dire consequences on both past and present students as well as academic and non-academic staff of the affected faculties and departments.

Shocking Confession of a Madonna University Student.

Following the recent action taken by NUC to sanitize Nigerian Private Universities, mixed reactions have been trailing the suspension of the operational licenses of the affected private universities especially from Nigeria Students. Madonna University, Lead City University, Obong University, Caritas University, Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Tansian University and Achievers University were on Wednesday June 4th, listed by the National Universities Commission for allegedly violating NUC's guideline's on school facilities and academic programmes, thereby leading to the suspension of their operational licenses.

NYSC Members to Learn Martial Arts

The Ogun State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mrs. Theresa Anosike says NYSC had introduced martial arts training for all the corps members posted to the state as part of effort to ensure the security of corps members.

Unizik VC Arrested By EFCC

The Vice Chancellor of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (Unizik), Professor Boniface Egboka, was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), for the misappropriation of billions of Naira meant for the institution, awarding fake and inflated contracts to cronies, as well as selective bidding and fraudulent contract.

Lagos State House of Assembly protest against posting of corps members to the north.

Lagos State House of Assembly Members have protested against the resolve by the NYSC to send graduates for the mandatory one year service to some troubled areas of the north, they stressed that they would continue to reject it as NYSC does not have adequate provision for the security of life and property.

Ebonyi State University (EBSU) to start admitting Medical Students.

The Medical Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has approved the re-accreditation of College of Health Sciences of Ebonyi State University (EBSU) to continue training of Medical Students after a two year suspension. This came as a result of the
reaccredidation visit to the College on Tuesday 15th May 2012.

Students of Medical laboratory science department of Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki who merited the BACHELOR OF MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE (BMLS) are to be inducted into the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria on Friday the 29th of June 2012.

Students are advised to check their names in the schools notice board as the names for those to be inducted has been released. 

JAMB excludes 262 institutions from admitting students

Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB Tuesday said it had excluded 262 institutions of higher learning from participating in next year’s admission exercise for non-compliance with admission guidelines.

UNILAG students hail court decision on name change

Students of the University of Lagos have expressed excitement over the interlocutory injunction restraining the Federal Government and the National Assembly from renaming their institution to Moshood Abiola University of Lagos.

In a statement, the President of UNILAG Press Club, Tosin Adesile, said that the students were  satisfied with the court ruling that directed that the name of UNILAG should be retained pending the determination of the suit filed by the past students of the institution.

NUC suspends part-time programmes in universities

The National Universities Commission on Monday 25th June 2012, announced the suspension of all Part-Time Programmes run by universities in the country.

The Executive Secretary of the commission, Prof. Julius Okojie, said the suspension of the part- time programmes was to enable the regulatory body “streamline’’ them.

Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), says candidates are to answer questions by e-testing in the 2013 Unified Tertiary and Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Fire in Student Affairs office.

PRESCO: A sudden fire caused by an electrical malfunction in the student affairs office presco campus of Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki on Monday morning caused tension and panic in the university premises.

The incident occurred at around 11.30 am. Sources said that the office personnel with the aid of security officers used fire extinguishers to douse the fire.
